A vibrant student housing masterplan for the Weizmann Institute
Statutory approvals
The Weizmann Institute of Science is among the world’s leading multidisciplinary research institutions.
To address the growing demand for student housing, the Institute initiated a masterplan to add over 800 new dwelling units on campus. A significant proportion of the students are international, relying on the Institute for housing solutions.
The site, located on the northwestern edge of the campus near Herzl Street and the Rehovot railway station, was previously a botanical acclimatization garden and includes numerous mature trees, some rare, designated for preservation.
The masterplan proposes a vibrant, mixed-use campus edge with mid-rise and high-rise housing typologies, reflecting the urban intensity of its surroundings. A commercial frontage along Herzl Street creates an active interface between the Institute and the city, replacing the existing fence with a “living boundary.”
Preserving the site’s unique ecological character, the plan introduces a contemporary living environment that strengthens the connection between the campus and the city.
